Hazel is safe after she was abandoned in a plastic bag. She has a new friend in Greta – another rescued doeling who needed somewhere safe.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 September 2026) – Two tiny kids who were both found in awful circumstances have sparked a friendship.

Hazel arrived at the Johannesburg SPCA late in August after she was found abandoned inside a plastic bag. She was only a few days old at the time and was bottle-fed by the SPCA’s staff while she recovered in its farmyard. She has come a long way since then!

“We’re so happy to say that Hazel is doing SO much better! This little girl is eating us out of house and home, growing stronger by the day, playing, and keeping everyone on their toes! She’s even started nibbling on the grass and is happily drinking her milk,” the Johannesburg SPCA shared.

Hazel has also been joined by a new friend. Greta recently arrived at the SPCA after she too was found in awful circumstances, inside a dustbin with her legs bound and her mouth tied closed.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, the South African Police Service contacted the SPCA’s Inspectorate and brought the tiny goat to its premises in Booysens, where she could be safe and cared for.

The two baby goats made fast friends and the little long-eared companions now spend their days discovering the world together, in a safe space.

“Hazel and her new little friend found each other. They have taken to one another beautifully — playing, exploring and keeping each other company. Where there was once fear and uncertainty, there are now two little girls enjoying being exactly what they should be: happy, playful babies.” the SPCA shares.

“We’re incredibly grateful that both these little girls are now safe, cared for and surrounded by people who will give them every chance to thrive. Two little survivors. One very special friendship. And a whole lot of love.”

“And it seems they’ve decided they need a bigger friendship circle…Our resident cat, Charlie, has also made friends with Hazel and Greta.”
