A coral reef like no other! Hand-made, crochet and creative activism at its finest! The Two Oceans Aquarium’s latest installation is almost as wonderful as the marine life.
Cape Town (06 July, 2023) — Even those of us who have explored the oceans at length and encountered gorgeous coral reefs before have never seen a coral reef quite like the one at the Two Oceans Aquarium.
Entirely crocheted, the art-meets-ocean installation was made by hundreds of South Africans over almost two decades, as the TOA excitedly shares.
However, the installation is making waves for reasons bigger than creativity by stitching together an important message. Just like the crochet coral reef takes a lot of people coming together to create something beautiful, so does the response to climate change and the focus on our oceans.
Protecting our oceans and all the marine life that call wide waters home takes collective efforts. The beauty is double-edged with concern with hopes to make us realise that we don’t want to live in a world where crochet coral reefs are the only kind around!
The project forms part of a larger network of ocean activism as a Satellite Reef instalment of the larger Crochet Coral Reef project based in Los Angeles, which again is a testament to what a lot of people can create when working together; even if they’re oceans apart!
The Crochet Coral Reef project has been exhibited across the world, from the Smithsonian to Germany’s Museum Frider Burda. Its Cape Town home was made by the Woodstock Art Reef Project (WARP) and Dr Dylan McGarry.
Be awed by the one-of-a-kind coral reef and learn more about the real reef’s challenges at the Two Oceans Aquarium on the ramp leading to the Penguin Exhibit.
