South Africa’s “most viral agency” is leveraging the Barbie Phenomenon to take local brands to the “Barbieverse”.

Johannesburg, South Africa (24 July 2023) – In a groundbreaking move, Retroviral, South Africa’s most viral agency, has harnessed the unstoppable Barbie phenomena to give some of its clients’ brands a dazzling makeover in the “barbieverse.”

Riding on the incredible success of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which achieved an astonishing $337 million at the international box office this weekend, Retroviral is making sure that local brands don’t miss out on the pink-tastic party. With “My Kreepy Teacher,” “Rassie’s Bakery,” “South Africa’s Tinder Swindler,” and the adorable “The Dog One” and “The Cat One” already under their belt, Retroviral has now brought a touch of Barbie magic to some of their brave South African clients, including HTH, Lil-Lets, and Ouma.

Mike Sharman, the visionary Chief Creative Officer of Retroviral, expressed his excitement about this extraordinary campaign, saying, “This is the first time in human history that we are all occupying a global water cooler moment. So when there’s an opportunity to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, you bet we’re going to make the most of it!”

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has become a phenomenon in its own right, smashing records left and right. Notably, it secured the largest opening weekend of 2023 and made history as the biggest-ever debut for a female director. With these impressive achievements, it’s no surprise that the movie has also claimed the crown for the highest opening for a female director and a toy movie.

The “Barbieverse” has captivated audiences worldwide, inspiring a sense of nostalgia while breaking new ground with its empowering message. Recognizing the potential for their clients’ brands to resonate with the masses, Retroviral ingeniously brought HTH, Lil-Lets, and Ouma into the iconic Barbie world.

The masterminds at Retroviral meticulously reimagined these brands, infusing them with the essence of Barbie’s charm and appeal. From pastel-hues to empowering messaging, each brand has undergone a pink-tastic transformation that pays homage to the beloved doll while staying true to its own unique South African identity. This bold campaign comes as no surprise from Retroviral, known for their innovative and daring approach to marketing. By seizing the Barbie phenomenon, they have positioned their clients at the forefront of a global sensation, sparking conversations and creating lasting impressions.

Mike Sharman further elaborated, “Barbie is more than just a toy; she represents empowerment, inclusivity, and endless possibilities. By aligning our clients’ brands with this cultural icon, we’re opening doors to connect with audiences in new and meaningful ways”.

As the “Barbieverse” continues to captivate hearts, it’s safe to say that Retroviral has positioned South African brands for an exciting and unforgettable journey through the magic of Barbie as well.
