Luthando Molefe’s passion for creating a better future for all, especially the youth, won him two prestigious awards.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (19 August 2024) – Luthando Molefe, a University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) doctoral candidate, was honoured with two awards during Youth Month.

He was named one of the top 100 Unsung Heroes by Sunday World and a Trailblazer by Public Sector Manager magazine for his exceptional work in academics, community involvement, and leadership.

According to UKZN, the awards celebrate young people aged between 18 and 35, working towards changing the world for the better.

They are also commended for their honesty and helpfulness not only in their communities but also in places where they can offer a helping hand for the good of all.

Commenting on his two awards and the challenges faced by SA youth, Molefe said:

“Thirty years into democracy, South Africa has experienced significant changes and challenges in many sectors, including the youth. Although visible changes in terms of access, throughput and success in education have been accomplished, today’s youth continues to grapple with several confrontations such as inequality, unemployment and poverty.

“These realities make it difficult to work towards the achievement of the National Development Plan 2030, the African Union Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This then calls for an exploration of different, relevant and context-specific approaches if we are to achieve what we have long set for ourselves on local and global stages.”

Molefe also believes universities should deeply integrate with their communities as communities are essential partners in achieving a university’s goals.

Molefe demonstrates an extraordinary work ethic and a profound passion for people. His dedication to his academic pursuits, coupled with his commitment to community outreach and leadership, speaks volumes about his character.

His recognition as both an Unsung Hero and a Trailblazer underscores his exceptional qualities and the positive impact he has on those around him.
