A severely dehydrated, under-fed and injured vervet monkey has been given a second chance at life after finding solace at the Wild Heart Wildlife Foundation. Here, the infant is getting all the TLC he needs to hopefully make a full recovery and join a troop soon.
Limpopo, South Africa (31 October 2024) – Vervet monkeys often get a bad rep due to their misunderstood and mischievous behaviour in many urban areas. But just like every other creature, great and small, they deserve a little compassion, too.
One injured little guy is on the mend after being welcomed with warm arms at the Wild Heart Wildlife Foundation (WHWF) in Limpopo recently.
The baby monkey arrived at the sanctuary in a critical condition, severely underfed, stressed and with a swollen contusion on his skull, hinting at a traumatic fall.
While his history is not known, the WHWF team, with their compassionate hearts and expert care, are working tirelessly to nurse the monkey back to good health.
This care includes keeping him calm in a dark soft crate, three-hourly feeds and the administering of pain meds to reduce swelling and inflammation.
“Rehydration in such cases has to be done carefully to not overload their system. He has a swollen contusion on the back of his skull, consistent with a fall such as where a mother is hit by a car or shot, and the baby falls,” the organisation shared.
As the monkey grows stronger, the WHWF hopes to place him with an orphan troop where he can find companionship and a sense of belonging.
Rooting for this little fighter’s full recovery, WHFH emphasised that every life matters while noting the vital function that vervet monkeys play in keeping a balanced ecosystem.
