Known for her radiant smile, an abundance of tight hugs, and her genuinely warm welcome, Maria made a lasting impression on everyone she met at a well-known pilates studio in Cape Town. Her passing has left an irreplaceable void, especially for her loving family. But they have since been comforted by a community that has rallied to support them through this difficult time.

Cape Town, South Africa (27 June 2025) – To those who frequented the Breathe Barre studio in Cape Town, they would have likely encountered the warm soul that was Maria. She had the brightest smile in the room and gave the tightest hugs that would lift you right off the ground!

Maria sadly passed away last week, leaving an irreplaceable void in all those who had the pleasure of knowing her, and especially her family.

Chelsey Gardyne, among many others, fondly remembers Maria’s immense pride in caring for the studio and all who entered its doors.

“The warmest welcome for everyone who walked through our doors. She took such pride in caring for the studio – and all of us.”

“We know so many of you felt her love just as we did, and we are absolutely heartbroken. She leaves behind a loving family,” says Chelsey.

In a beautiful testament to the impact Maria had and with hope to help her bereaved family get through this difficult season, Chesley launched a crowdfunding campaign nine days ago, and the community responded with overwhelming love and support.

Condolences, heartwarming messages and funds have poured in, exceeding the R10,000 target that Chesley had created.

This incredible show of support alone truly highlights the deep love and appreciation the community had for dear Maria. We hope this will bring some form of comfort to her loved ones, and more especially, that Maria rests well.

“To our Maria – we love you, and we will miss you forever,” the Breathe Barre team said.
