The Red Wall saga has taken another delicious turn, and this time, it’s SPAR stepping in to serve up some joy… and free chips.
Johannesburg, South Africa (12 July 2025) – The Red Wall in Bryanston is back in the headlines and this time, it’s thanks to a grocery store that’s turned a viral mystery into an edible moment.
If you’ve been following the drama (or comedy?) of Bryanston’s most talked-about corner, you’ll know this wall is no ordinary slab of paint. Since early July, the red wall on Grosvenor and Bryanston Drive has been the subject of memes, community debates, a guessing game worth R50,000, and even a surprise appearance from Tabasco, which sparked a fiery twist with free sauce and branded gear.
Now, just when you thought the campaign couldn’t get any more bizarre (or brilliant), SPAR has entered the chat.
Yup. SPAR.
Yesterday, the Red Wall’s official Facebook page posted a cheeky update:
“SPAR came, saw, and stocked the Red Wall. Free goodies for everyone—because why not turn a wall into a snackscape? And yes, Tabasco may have stolen the wall once… but Spar just out-snacked you.”
Bryanston residents arrived to find a stash of free snacks, courtesy of their friendly neighbourhood grocer, lined up on the infamous wall. No permission slip. No QR code. Just freebies, a smile, and a wall that’s now part community board, part marketing playground.
The internet, naturally, is obsessed.
“Best advertising ever… on everyone’s lips.”
“I love this wall.”
“I ❤️ love it. Can’t wait to see end result 🙌 brilliant marketing.”
This latest twist follows a series of increasingly playful updates on the wall itself. After Tabasco’s impromptu “hijack,” the red paint was updated with the words:
“Cute, Tabasco! The real heat is still coming.”
Then came:
“Please stop calling the cops, Karen.”
And now… free snacks and even more speculation.
While no one has officially claimed the campaign, it’s clear that someone, or some clever agency, is pulling the strings with precision and humour. It’s rare for a wall to go viral, let alone hold an entire community’s attention for weeks on end. Yet here we are, counting down the days to 15 July, when all is meant to be revealed.
What started as a splash of red paint has turned into something much bigger.
It’s brought people together. Sparked laughs, debates and (apparently) snack runs. It’s challenged what traditional marketing looks like, and reminded us that curiosity, creativity, and a little bit of chaos still have the power to disrupt our daily routines… and maybe even make them a little more fun.
