While researching organ donation, Sian instinctively registered as a stem cell donor, seeing it as a natural extension of her desire to help. She never expected that simple act would save a life five years later.
South Africa (28 July 2025) – Five years ago, Sian had no idea that she would become the very reason someone she had never met before would find hope and the will to keep living.
At that time, the 23-year-old student was researching how to become an organ donor when she also decided to register as a stem cell donor with DKMS Africa.
“It felt like a natural extension of wanting to help wherever I could,” she recalls.
“I had already started donating blood, so I thought I might as well sign up.”
What she didn’t expect was how that small act would come full circle.
When the call came, informing her that she was a match for a patient in desperate need, Sian was filled with a mix of excitement and disbelief.
“It didn’t feel real at first. I had even forgotten I’d registered. But I was absolutely thrilled to say yes.”
With her mum by her side, Sian made her way to donate. Finding the medical process fascinating, she remembers being curious about every step:
“I wanted to know everything—how it all works, the machines, the steps, the science behind it. It was honestly such an interesting experience.”
As a dedicated blood donor, Sian is committed to playing her part in helping others in need of vital support. But donating her stem cells felt uniquely personal.
“When you give blood, you don’t always know who it goes to. But this felt different. It felt personal. Knowing that my donation could directly save someone’s life—it was overwhelming in the best way,” Sian reflects.
Sending an encouraging message to the patient, Sian added:
“I know recovery won’t be easy, but I’m keeping everything crossed for your journey. I hope one day we might even get to meet. That would be really special.”
Already having demonstrated such a special act, Sian has helped save a life and offered the priceless gift of more memories, experiences and renewed hope.
