Atlas, a specially trained service dog, joins New Hope School to bring support and a strong lesson on inclusion.

Pretoria, South Africa (31 July 2025) – There is a new “learner” in the halls of New Hope School, and he has four paws, a wagging tail, and a heart as big as his name, Atlas. The school, in collaboration with the South African Guide Dog Association for the Blind, recently introduced this specially trained service dog to support a learner throughout the school day.

In a joyful Facebook post, New Hope School shared their excitement,

“Atlas brings not only wagging tails and a big heart, but will be supporting a learner throughout the day. His presence is a wonderful reminder of the power of kindness, inclusion, and understanding.”

His arrival is a celebration of kindness, inclusion, and understanding of others’ needs. With the guidance of his dedicated trainers, Kabelo, Chris, and Amy, Atlas is prepared for this important role.

New Hope School has long been a place where challenges are met with creativity, care, and courage. From its humble beginnings with just 33 learners, the school has grown to 417 learners today, offering education from Grade RRR to Grade 12. The school caters for children with physical disabilities, traumatic head injuries, ADHD, and other learning challenges, providing not only academics but also life and vocational skills that empower learners for the future.

Welcoming Atlas is yet another step in the school’s mission to create a space where every learner feels seen, supported, and celebrated. His arrival reminds everyone that inclusion is joyful, and that sometimes the best teachers can have fur.
