Born from the grief of personal loss, the YouMatterWalk unites communities to break the silence around mental health and offer vital support, reminding everyone that no one should walk through life’s struggles alone.
Olifantsfontein, South Africa (01 August 2025) – United by grief but driven by purpose, the YouMatterWalk was born from the hearts of three women and their families who experienced the devastating loss of loved ones to suicide.
With the shared vision to save others from the heartache and devastation left behind by suicide, the YouMatterWalk has become their way of standing in solidarity with anyone going through a tough season and reminding them that they shouldn’t walk through life alone.
“We created this initiative to be a beacon of hope, helping others access vital resources, find support, and raise awareness around suicide prevention and mental health,” shares YouMatterWalk founders and warriors, Christia, Ilse and Carla.

The event helps encourage people to talk about their struggles with suicidal thoughts, crush the stigma surrounding mental health and support those touched by suicide loss through various organisations and support groups.
The fourth annual YouMatterWalk will be held on Saturday, 13 September 2025, at the Big Red Barn in Olifantsfontein (south of Irene and east of Midstream on the M18).
Participants can choose to walk 2,5km, 5km or 10km distances.
“We are partnering with NGOs such as Lifeline and SADAG, who will be present on the day to provide support, share resources, and help raise awareness around mental health and suicide prevention. Trained counsellors from various organisations will also be walking with us,” shares Ilse Meiring.
“Our mission is to create a meaningful, impactful event that saves lives. If we can help even one family avoid the pain and devastation of suicide, it will all be worth it.”
