Family and friends rally behind rugby player Rico Eagles as he fights to return to the game he loves after a serious injury.

South Africa (11 August 2025) – Rico Eagles is a 22-year-old rugby player whose passion for the game is just undeniable. From a young age, rugby has been more than just a sport for Rico. It has been a part of who he is and what drives him every day. Being a committed player, he has dedicated hours to the game.

On 26 July 2025, during a tough match, Rico suffered a serious neck injury after a heavy tackle. Since then, he had been receiving treatment at Mamelodi Hospital and was urgently waiting for surgery to help him recover fully and return to the sport he loves.

The family was hopeful but faced some challenges, including delays in transferring Rico to Steve Biko Hospital for the needed spinal fusion surgery. Then complications arose that required careful medical attention to prevent further issues.

The Eagles’ family never imagined they would face such a dire situation. Rico’s family reached out for support to help cover medical costs and to connect with anyone who might assist with private medical care. They remained positive and focused on Rico’s recovery journey.

“We never imagined we’d be in this position. We knew the risks of playing a contact sport without medical aid—but when your child has such passion, it’s hard to say no. We now find ourselves facing the harsh reality that comes with that decision.” – Lorraine Eagles via SupaRugby

The Eagles’ family thanks everyone who has supported them so far. They managed to fund Rico’s BackaBuddy fund in full, and he successfully underwent the surgery he needed.

“Thanks to each and every one of you, we now have the funds to cover all necessary costs.”

“Rico is out of theatre and everything went well. We cannot say thank you enough; without each of you, this would not have been possible” – Lorraine Eagles via BackaBuddy

Rico’s story is one filled with passion. Not just from him but also the people around him who want to see him succeed, and with the help of the community, he can look forward to many more rugby matches ahead.
