From taxis to braais, these are the everyday things that are authentic to South Africans and sometimes make them scream with laughter.

South Africa (15 August 2025) – If you had to think on the spot, what screams South Africa? What would your list look like? Well, radio presenter Mitch Matyana had social media in stitches this week after posting a video revealing his “Top Three Things That Scream South Africa”. And let’s just say he nailed it.

Coming in at number three? Taxis (or Quantums), the unofficial rulers of the road. Complete with their own set of rules, driving on pavements and always driving on the fast lanes. But we totally get! You have to make sure people get to work on time.

Number two? The smell of a braai. That mouthwatering aroma that instantly makes you hungry, even if you just ate. Or fighting off friends to decide who is going to be the braai master.

And in the number one spot, buying things at the robots. The traffic light stop could also mean getting snacks, sunglasses, phone chargers, and the odd steering wheel cover.

But the fun did not stop there. People in the comments section quickly joined in, adding their own hilarious entries. Like Loadshedding, because what is more South African than planning your dinner around the Eskom schedule? Shouting at a hadedas.

Mitch’s video has turned into a light-hearted reminder that, for all its quirks, South Africa is full of moments and sounds that make it unlike anywhere else in the world.
