During what was supposed to be a regular Tuesday evening at the Mdzananda Animal Clinic, the team experienced the most devastating ordeal when a massive truck crashed into the operating theatre and flattened the storage room.

Khayelitsha, South Africa (03 September 2025) – Nothing could have prepared the hard-working team of the Mdzananda Animal Clinic for the unexpected tragedy that would quite literally shake them and their establishment this week.

During the evening of what was thought to be a regular Tuesday at the Khayelitsha animal clinic, a truck driver drove straight into the animal clinic’s operating theatre, causing immense destruction.

“Our operating theatre is completely smashed and will need to be rebuilt from scratch,” the team shared in a post following the harrowing incident.

The storage room was also flattened and urgently needs rebuilding.

The severe structural damage, damage they could have never budgeted for, has left the team utterly devastated. Especially because it comes right after a car lost control on the road outside the clinic, damaging the fence and part of the hospital building earlier in the week.

“The only silver lining is that no animals or staff were harmed, and our staff are resilient.”

In addition to treating over 1,500 Khayelitsha pets a month, the nonprofit clinic offers consultations, hospitilisation, surgery, sterilisations, mobile clinics, an animal ambulance, homeless animal adoptions, cruelty investigation and humane education

Though lives were thankfully spared, the loss experienced at the animal clinic will affect the team’s efficiency, which needs the community’s help in rebuilding what’s been lost.

“We will continue to treat animals and deliver the best service we can.

“Our theatre is out of action due to the bad luck we’ve faced this week but at Mdzananda we always make a plan. Today [3 September], surgeries continued because we don’t give up when things get hard. Our passion for helping animals runs too deep.”

Nothing can stop this team. Not cars. Not trucks. Not even chaos.

Donations can be made to the banking details below to help the Mzananda Animal Clinic restore its operating theatre and get back to saving lives.
