Matthew Du Toit ran from his home in Macassar, through several towns, all the way to Green Point and back, covering a 100km distance, to support brave warriors at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
Cape Town, South Africa (09 September 2025) – Inspired by his cousin’s recovery from burn wounds, Matthew “Crazy Sharky” Du Toit channelled his love for running and heart for others into his very first charity event this past weekend – a 100km marathon in support of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
Moved by the brave warriors who often face pain and complications beyond their years, Matthew ran from his house in Macassar through various towns, including Eerste River, Kuils River, Parow, Maitland, V&A Waterfront, and all the way to Green Point before turning back at 50km, reaching a total of 100km.
Good Things Guy caught up with the compassionate runner who shared that although the journey was far from easy, he’s truly glad he did it.
“The run was to support the young ones at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, and l’m so glad I ran for that cause. There are a lot of parents who struggle to provide for their children, which adds to the sadness of seeing them in the hospital. I wanted to help that sadness fade away.”

Matthew’s efforts went beyond raising funds. He also collected blankets, toiletries, toys, and art supplies to bring comfort and joy to the children.
“My experience of the 100km run for charity was totally unforgettable in terms of the support and cheers along the way, which was so appreciated. There was a time when l really had an emotional breakdown, but I think that is normal. This experience was phenomenal and great,” Matthew adds.
Matthew was also joined by other runners on the road, which he says he deeply appreciated, as this was a cause close to his heart.
He extended his heartfelt gratitude to Aunty Sandra Russell and her team, as well as Aunty Auriël and her team at the water stations, who played a significant part in keeping his momentum going.
Matthew’s journey has affirmed that compassion truly knows no distance, and he’s already pumped to embark on more challenges with the sole purpose of making a difference.
