The Springboks’ record win in Wellington reignited their Rugby Championship defence and reminded fans why they are world champions.
Wellington, New Zealand (15 September 2025) – Who would have thought that just a week after their 24-17 loss to New Zealand in Auckland, the Springboks would bounce back in such spectacular fashion? On Saturday in Wellington, South Africa did not just beat the All Blacks. They stormed to a record 43-10 victory, the heaviest defeat ever inflicted on their great rivals.
What makes it even sweeter is that the win came away from home, where victories against New Zealand are notoriously difficult to come by. The Boks ran in six tries, showcasing a new-look backline and the impact of Rassie Erasmus’ bold selection changes. This was a statement.
Last week’s result had many South Africans stressed, with questions about form and momentum around the team. But this time, the Boks reminded the world why they are the reigning world champions. On top of retaining the Freedom Cup, they also held on to their number one world ranking, underlining their status as the team to beat.

This was a result that turned frustration into celebration in the space of seven days.
Of course, Erasmus and his team won’t be getting carried away. The Rugby Championship is still alive, and the next test is still around the corner. South Africa will host Argentina in Durban on 27 September before facing them again in London a week later.
For now, the Springboks can enjoy the satisfaction of history made in Wellington.
