Multiple reports have confirmed that canine distemper is unfortunately doing the rounds in Gauteng. Here’s what you need to do as a pet owner!
Gauteng, South Africa (19 September 2025) – Multiple reports from Tshwane, Johannesburg and Randburg SPCAs have warned of a distemper outbreak in Gauteng.
Canine distemper is a really serious and highly contagious viral illness. It affects a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological, ocular (eyes), and integumentary (skin) systems. The virus spreads through direct contact, as well as via coughing, sneezing, and various bodily fluids.
The best thing you as a pet owner is to be aware and take active steps towards protecting your four-legged friendies.
If you are in Gauteng, we’d like to share a few pointers of what to look out for, and crucial tips about how to keep your pets safe.
Symptoms of distemper to be aware of are fever, eye and nose discharge, coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, loss of appetite. In severe cases it will present with seizures, tremors, paralysis, and even death.
Sadly, there is no cure for this viral illness, SPCAs are only able to offer euthanasia if it presents in pets.
That’s why it’s incredibly important to protect your animals by taking the right steps in prevention!
The Randburg SPCA urges the following steps be taken by pet owners:
- Ensure your pets are up-to-date with vaccinations
- Keep dogs away from stray or sick animals
- Avoid sharing food or water bowls in public places
- See a vet right away if your dog shows any symptoms at all
Keep your pooches safe, friends!
