In Jozi, Cape Town, Gqeberha, or White River? Bring your hooks. Bring your wool. Bring a friend who’s always said they’d like to learn to knit. And be part of spreading the GOOD!

South Africa (17 April 2026) – It’s World Creativity and Innovation Day on 18 April and South Africa’s beloved 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement is bringing communities together in cities across the country for a day filled with all the things that make our world go round. Colour, craft, and kindness!

In Joburg, the gathering will be held at the Steyn City centre, inviting all families, friends and crafters to spend the morning together surrounded by beautiful blanket displays and happy vibes. It runs from 9 am to 3 pm, entry is free, and there’ll be pop-up food on site. All the good things.

Cape Town hosts its own event at the Congregational Church in Claremont (9 am–1 pm), Gqeberha gathers for a creativity picnic at the Pearson Conservatory in St George’s Park (9:30 am–12 pm, entry is just one ball of wool!), and White River’s Knitwits are going all out with unveiling a Giant Easter Egg installation and hosting a creative display with artist guest speaker Felicity Bell on 21 April.

The movement was founded by Carolyn Steyn in 2013 with the simple but powerful idea that ordinary people with yarn and love could create warmth for those in need. It has grown into something extraordinary over the years. Thousands of volunteers have knitted and crocheted blankets that have reached hospitals, shelters, schools, and vulnerable communities across South Africa.

The events also mark an exciting new chapter as Annie Robinson Grealy has stepped in to head up operations, with Steyn remaining closely involved at executive level. Robinson Grealy says her focus will be on supporting and strengthening the incredible network of ambassadors and volunteers who make the whole thing possible.

If you’re anywhere near one of these gatherings this Saturday, go! It’s an excuse to pick up your knitting needles or crochet hooks and do some real good in the world.
