Johannesburg, South Africa (06 October 2025) – Let’s be honest, guys don’t always have the easiest time talking about what’s going on inside. The pressure to ‘just get on with it’ can be strong, even though we know how common stress, anxiety, and depression are amongst both men and women.
Genuine, face-to-face connection is something many men are missing, too. Especially when other ‘life stuff’ takes priority. That’s why something as straightforward as a walk matters more than you’d think.
Research shows walking lowers stress hormones, improves sleep, boosts creativity, and helps regulate mood. Add to that a non-judgemental space to talk, or just walk quietly with others, and it becomes a genuinely useful tool for mental wellbeing.
We’ve said it before, movement is one heck of a tool.
In the past, we’ve featured stories about incredible local outdoor activity-based groups that are meant just for ladies. This one, on the other hand, is just for the dudes.
Recharge is a small, Jozi-based men’s wellness initiative started by Joe Fleming, an American living in the city. We’ve written about Joe before; he often goes viral taste-testing South African snacks. So far, biltong and rusks are a hit with him.
Back to the point.
Every Friday morning at 6 am, men meet Joe at the Blue Bridge in Delta Park for a 4km walk. There’s no pressure, no performance, no agenda and very little structure to it. It’s just about movement, conversation, and a chance to start the day feeling a little lighter.
The outings have grown since Fleming first kicked off with it. Guys from all walks of life pitch-up for the adventure. Joe says its a great way to kick off the weekend on a good note.
On top of the weekly walks, Fleming also organises Recharge weekends, which are longer getaways meant to give men space to fully unplug from routine. There’s one is coming up in December. There will be hikes, bushcrafting, good food and downtime to reset at your own pace.
But, show up for a walk first and see what it might do for you.
