A unique initiative in Mpophomeni shows how children and dogs can learn, grow, and thrive together while highlighting the importance of animal welfare.

Mpophomeni, South Africa (06 October 2025) – Funda Nenja, a community-based initiative in the township of Mpophomeni, near Howick in KwaZulu-Natal, celebrated World Animal Day (4th October), an international celebration of kindness and compassion for animals. Translating from isiZulu as “learning with a dog,” the program uses dog training as a unique tool to foster respect for all living beings while promoting personal growth among children.

Every Friday afternoon, around 100 children and their dogs gather at Sifisesihle Primary School for training sessions led by dedicated volunteer instructors. These volunteers, who have completed the program themselves, receive regular workshops to improve their dog training skills and teaching methods. All participating dogs are fitted with collars and leads, dewormed, and closely monitored for health, with veterinary care provided when needed. Dogs in the program are also sterilised at no cost.

The initiative goes beyond teaching obedience. Children learn self-discipline, responsibility, and commitment while gaining a deeper understanding of animal welfare. Social workers are on hand to support the families, helping with counselling, accessing vital documents for social grants, or connecting them with other services. Learners also receive a healthy snack during each session, while families in need benefit from vegetable hampers and dog food to help ease the pressures of everyday life.

Funda Nenja’s approach reflects the “One Welfare” philosophy, which recognises the strong link between human and animal wellbeing. In 2017, the initiative marked World Animal Day by parading all the programme’s dogs through the township, drawing community attention to the importance of animal care. This year, the celebration included a window display at the Mpophomeni public library, highlighting the organisation’s ongoing mission to educate and inspire the community about the value of compassion for all living beings.

Through its mix of hands on training, social support, and public awareness initiatives, Funda Nenja continues to make a tangible difference.
