Content creator Sam Jose takes on Cape Town’s iconic Gatsby as part of his global search for the ultimate everyday sandwich.

Global (16 April 2026) – Food content creator Sam Jose is on a global mission with a simple goal, and that’s to eat his way through sandwiches from every country until he finds the one he could happily have every single day.

His latest stop is South Africa. And more specifically, Cape Town’s legendary Gatsby. You know, the famously oversized sandwich packed with layers, fillings, and serious flavour.

While he noted that variations of the Gatsby can include different fillings, he leaned into a hearty meat-based version, building up layer after layer before assembling the final product.

Along the way, he also shared some fun trivia around the sandwich’s origins, including its reputation as a crowd-feeder.

Sam described it as a sandwich that essentially “has everything you could want,” clearly impressed by both the taste and scale of the South African favourite.

The content creator, who describes himself as “not a chef, but I do like to cook,” continues his series of global sandwich trials, but the South African entry has certainly raised the bar.

With its size and flavour, the Gatsby might just be one of the strongest contenders.
