Family Rallies for Car Guard Son to Secure a Full Recovery After Near-Fatal Surgery

When her son faced a life-threatening crisis that began with an emergency surgery, Sophia Nel’s world came to an unexpected standstill. Chris, a breadwinner and beloved car guard from Manaba, is currently fighting to return to good health. In response, his family is rallying the community for support to help them navigate this challenging ordeal.

Margate, South Africa (20 October 2025) – Sophia Nel’s world came to an unexpected standstill when her son faced a life-threatening crisis that began with an emergency surgery for a Dead Bowel.

Just as the family dared to breathe a sigh of relief after his procedure, Chris’s ordeal was followed by another devastating complication when his surgical wound opened up, forcing him back to the hospital.

Chris, a PSiRA-registered car guard, has been fighting back and is healing well with a specialised VAC (Wound Management System) under the care of a wonderful nurse named Precious. His discharge has been postponed to ensure a full recovery; however also presents circumstances that leave his loved ones in a hard place financially.

“Our struggle is now logistical and financial: As a SASSA pensioner, I am raising funds to cover the essential transport to the hospital for his specialised dressing changes, his protein-rich nutritional support for healing, and the urgent medical costs for our diabetic dog, Rambo,” shares concerned mom, Sophia.

Even when he is discharged from the hospital, Chris will still require 4 to 8 weeks of complete rest. That’s weeks of no work and thereby no income for his household or the family’s diabetic dog, whose care is a small part of Chris’s financial need.

“Being in the hospital for so long is hard for Chris, as he is always used to being active. We always take him safe purified water (the nurses advise against the tap water for him), cool drinks you can mix with water, and sometimes healthy snacks like health bars, milk or cookies to supplement his diet when we can afford it,” Sophia adds.

The family holds on to the hope that their application for Chris’s disability grant will be approved and afford them some stability during this difficult time. In their fierce dedication to bring Chris home after near-fatal complications and support his healing, they have also launched a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign.
