Dust off your Doc Martens… the LEGENDS that defined a generation are returning to one stage for the first time in decades.
Johannesburg, South Africa (23 October 2025) – There are nights you remember forever… the songs that shaped you, the friends you made at gigs, the outfits that should never have been fashionable and yet, somehow, still are.
Well, this weekend, Johannesburg gets one of those nights back.
On Saturday, the 25th of October, THE HANGOUT LEGENDS FEST is bringing together some of South Africa’s most iconic ’90s rock and alternative bands, reunited on one stage for the first time in decades. This is the show fans never thought they’d get to experience again.
Presented by South African music champion Kerry-Anne Allerston, the festival is calling all those who lived through the era of CDs (and cassette tapes), band posters stuck on bedroom walls and that one song you recorded off the radio perfectly without the DJ talking over it. The line-up reads like the tracklist of your 90s youth: Sugardrive, No Friends of Harry, Squeal, Boo!, Henry Ate, Plum, Wonderboom and Tidal Waves. The legends who gave South African music its attitude.
“For me, music is about connection, liberation, and love for this country. These artists are proof that South African music is timeless, always evolving but true to its raw, authentic core,” says Allerston.
And she’s right. If you grew up anywhere near a mosh pit, an alternative club, or a loud garage jam session, these songs are stitched into who you are.
But this event isn’t about looking back. It’s about celebrating the music that made us brave, gave us belonging and kept us dancing… even when things were tough. South African alternative music was a soundtrack to the ’90s… and a movement that shook the dust off the status quo.
And now, those legends are stepping back under the lights.
