When Play Takes Centre Stage: LEGO’s Massive F1 Build Touches Down in SA

LEGO just dropped their biggest SA moment ever (helicopter, giant box, the works) and the joy was electric. This is why play still matters.

South Africa (17 November 2025) – Last week Monday, I found myself standing on the tarmac at Zwartkops Raceway, watching a helicopter swoop over a crowd of wide-eyed media and influencers. A countdown began… the walls of a giant box collapsed… and suddenly, South Africa was face-to-face with LEGO’s biggest local campaign ever, an up-scaled LEGO® Technic Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance build.

And yes, it was as wild, theatrical and as joyful as it sounds.

Look, on the surface, you could easily say: “They built a big car out of LEGO… okay? So what?”

But I believe it’s more than that.

Most of us grew up with LEGO. Many of us still build it. It’s one of the few brands that crosses generations without losing an ounce of magic. My own shelves at home are lined with everything from Jurassic Park to their art series, to the Defender (my pride and joy). And now the smaller version of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 is calling my name, thanks to the gift they handed us at the launch.

But what really struck me at Zwartkops wasn’t just the car. It was the feeling.

Large-scale brand activations like this (especially for LEGO) usually happen overseas… New York, London, Singapore or Paris. Yet there we were… standing in Centurion… watching a helicopter “deliver” a massive LEGO Formula 1 car while a crowd of South Africans beamed like kids seeing Christmas lights for the first time.

It felt like we were being seen. Included. Celebrated. Not just as consumers but as part of the global LEGO story.

And I think that’s good news.

The event itself was a whole experience. Before any speeches or surprises, we got to do laps in a few beautiful Mercedes-Benzes around the track (proper bucket-list stuff). There were drinks, snacks, laughs and that familiar buzz when people know something big is about to happen.

Then the helicopter came in, doing a dramatic flyover and dropping a decoy box behind the real one waiting on the field. The countdown boomed through the speakers. The walls fell flat. And there it was: a breathtaking 5.1-metre-long, 2.2-metre-wide LEGO Technic masterpiece weighing over 900 kilograms.

Built from 192,937 LEGO bricks. Assembled in just eight hours. And shipped all the way from Singapore to South Africa: the largest life-size LEGO build ever brought into our country.

It looked unreal. Like art, engineering and childhood nostalgia decided to collaborate and give us something to smile about.

“The reveal forms part of LEGO South Africa’s ongoing commitment to celebrating creativity and innovation through play,” said Valery Kasimov, the newly appointed country manager for LEGO South Africa.

And that idea, celebrating creativity, is exactly what this whole activation felt like.

“This collaboration between LEGO South Africa and Mercedes-Benz is built on shared values of precision, performance and excellence,” added Claudius Steinhoff, Executive Director MBC & Co-CEO of Mercedes-Benz South Africa. “The LEGO Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 car celebrates our achievements at the pinnacle of motorsport and reflects the innovation, craftsmanship and passion that unite both brands.”

Two global names coming together to bring something joyful to South Africans?

Absolutely love it!

The up-scaled LEGO Technic Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 is officially going on a nationwide tour, giving fans across the country a chance to see it up close.

Here’s where you can catch it:

  • Nelson Mandela Square: 16 Nov – 3 Dec
  • Gateway (Durban): 12 Dec – 5 Jan
  • V&A Waterfront (Cape Town): 15 – 25 Jan
  • Sandton City (Joburg): 5 – 28 Feb

So yes, LEGO has kicked off their holiday campaign with a big F1  car and shopping centre activations, but I don’t think that’s my big “takeaway” here.

I think what grabbed me and gave me “all the feels” was watching grown adults, CEOs, journalists and creators, light up like children. It was seeing a brand that is choosing South Africa for something this massive. It was the feeling that play, imagination and joy still matter.

And that, in the middle of everything happening around us, is what I held onto, moments crafted purely to make us smile.

LEGO really does bring happiness (and sometimes really big F1 cars).
