The idea of hosting the Olympics has gained momentum once again, and talks with the IOC suggest South Africa could soon take a serious step toward making history.
South Africa (19 November 2025) – South Africa could be edging closer to making history as discussions continue around the possibility of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036 or 2040. The idea of bringing the Games to Africa has been on the table for some time, and recent developments suggest that South Africa is seriously considering taking the lead.
Government officials have confirmed ongoing conversations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Cape Town appears to be the likely candidate city. The Mother City once bid to host the 2004 Olympic Games, finishing third behind Rome in the final round before Athens was chosen. Durban previously secured the hosting rights for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but withdrew in 2017 due to financial constraints. Still, South Africa’s ability to stage major events has been proven time and time again.
South Africa’s Hosting History
- Rugby World Cup – 1995
- Cricket World Cup – 2003
- FIFA World Cup – 2010
- Discussions are also underway for a potential Formula 1 Grand Prix from 2027.
Interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics is growing globally, with Ahmedabad (India), Doha (Qatar), Istanbul (Turkey) and Santiago (Chile) also showing intent to bid. South Africa would face strong competition, but the appetite for bringing the Games to Africa remains strong.
The conversation officially gained momentum last year when a South African delegation visited IOC headquarters in Lausanne. That visit was a major step in engaging the Olympic movement, and the response from the IOC President, Thomas Bach was encouraging.
“The IOC warmly welcomes this interest and the united commitment of SASCOC, the government of South Africa and the support of the IOC Member and Honorary Member in South Africa. It has been presented to us today as a project to organise Olympic Games in South Africa, with and for the whole African continent. This project could one day lead to the first Olympic Games in Africa.”
While nothing is confirmed, the possibility has sparked excitement. With strong hosting experience and passionate sports culture, South Africa may just be positioning itself for a historic first: bringing the Olympic Games to Africa.
