Melissa Nayimuli showcased a striking national costume in Thailand, honouring her heritage through art, design and storytelling.
Thailand (20 November 2025)- South Africa was proudly represented at the 74th Miss Universe pageant in Thailand, where Miss SA 2023 finalist Melissa Nayimuli stood out for her presence and the powerful story woven into her national costume.
The Miss Universe pageant continues to be a global platform that celebrates diversity, culture and personal storytelling, offering women the chance to inspire through their journeys. Contestants from around the world occupied this space, and Melissa brought South Africa’s heritage forward in striking style.
Her costume was a modern take on the traditional Xhosa Umbaco, paying tribute to the women who shaped her. Especially her mother, who raised her with the strength and values of Xhosa culture.
Draped in a black-and-white cape, Melissa’s look symbolised the balance between grace and resilience, two qualities carried by generations of Eastern Cape women.
The flowing cape celebrated both craftsmanship and cultural storytelling, honouring the powerful matriarchs and creative minds who continue to shape South African history and art.
The costume also highlighted Melissa’s own spirit, one rooted in art, collaboration and the beauty of representation. More than an outfit, it became a statement that culture is living, it continues to evolve and is deserving of global recognition.
Through her presence on the Miss Universe stage, the TV and Creative producer showed that fashion is also storytelling stitched in fabric.
