After three years of cleaning up South Africa’s coastline, Save a Fishie is switching things up and opening the door for even more people to get involved.

South Africa (07 January 2026) – This year, the organisation’s well-known Coast 2 Coast initiative won’t be tackled as one long journey anymore. Instead, the organisation has launched six separate clean-up trips along beaches, estuaries and river mouths, spread across the year.

They’re calling it Coast 2 Coast 2026 in 6.

“Instead of one long trip, we’ll be embarking on SIX separate coastal cleanup journeys – each designed around the seasons, weather patterns and holiday periods to maximise impact where and when it’s needed most.” shares Save a Fishie.

The clean-ups will cover the Overberg, West Coast, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town and Eastern Cape.

The change comes after years of impact on the ground.

In 2023, Save a Fishie cleaned 111 beaches in 71 days, giving the team a sense of which areas needed the most TLC. In 2024, they narrowed their focus, spending six weeks cleaning priority areas and removing just over five tonnes of litter. The same route was followed again last year, with longer clean-ups and more time spent working alongside local schools and community groups.

The new format means more coastline will be covered overall, more communities will be reached, and more volunteers will have the opportunity to join in and make a difference.

Education sessions with schools will still be a key part of the programme, along with the collection of citizen science data on the types of plastic found along the coast.

The first Coast 2 Coast 2026 journey kicks off on 3 February, marking the start of what the team hopes will be their most active year yet. Here’s to saving our fishies!
