From 17 years on the frontlines to the rank of Chief Inspector, Nazareth Appalsamy’s inspiring journey proves that one person’s courage can be a lifeline for the most vulnerable.

spar hero of the week

South Africa (21 January 2026) – We are all called to fulfil a significant purpose in this lifetime – one that looks different for every one of us. For Nazareth Appalsamy, that calling is deeply rooted in saving and safeguarding the most vulnerable animals. Over the years, he has travelled great distances to face cruelty head-on, even in places where it is hardest to witness.

It is a path few have the courage to brave, but one Senior Inspector Nazareth has walked for 17 years, earning him one of the highest professional distinctions in the SPCA movement: the rank of Chief Inspector.

The recognition is highly esteemed and one that only a handful of Inspectors in the country have earned.

“Nazareth currently leads the NSPCA’s Farm Animal Protection Unit, our largest operational unit, where he oversees national inspections, complex investigations, and some of the most challenging animal welfare work in the country. From saleyards to remote farming communities, courtrooms to crisis scenes, his career has been defined by persistence, integrity, and quiet resolve,” reports the National Council of SPCAs.

Nazareth now joins Chief Inspector Douglas Wolhuter, Manager of the NSPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit, as one of only two active Chief Inspectors in South Africa – an accomplishment the NSPCA is deeply proud of.

Nazareth didn’t earn the rank based solely on the many years he’s served, but on his dedication, specialist skill, leadership on the field, expertise in the legalities, successful prosecutions and an unwavering commitment to animal protection under the most demanding conditions.

“Nazareth’s accession is not just a personal milestone. It strengthens the work we do nationally – for farm animals who have no voice, for cases that demand experience and authority, and for a system that depends on principled enforcement.”

We join the NSPCA in congratulating this animal hero on his exceptional achievement and for his tireless commitment to standing with those who cannot speak for themselves.
