Nothing lights up the roads in Nelson Mandela Bay more than Traffic Officer Thamsanqa Menzi. Not even the robots.

Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa (17 April 2026) – Traffic Officer Thamsanqa Menzi shows up to work dancing, and with his special ability to put a smile on the face of even the grumpiest motorists, he disables any road rage with a graceful spin and smile.

He’s gone viral many times over the years, captured by commuters who drive off with more joy than they first had pulling up at his intersection. Menzi’s moves have travelled roads far beyond the Eastern Cape!

This week, the municipality gave him his flowers as they acknowledged the good vibes, energy and rhythm he brings to peak hour traffic. When he’s around, shoulders drop and jaws unclench.

In a social media post, they wrote: “Traffic Officer, Thamsanqa Menzi, is bringing unmatched energy, rhythm, and style to the morning rush, keeping traffic flowing smoothly while lifting the spirits of commuters. Check his dance moves! Those leg and arm movements! It’s not something you expect during morning traffic, but it definitely adds a fun twist to the rush hour. From safety to good vibes.”

It’s the little things, like seeing Officer Menzi on your way to work, that set the tone for the rest of the day. At a time when things in the world feel so heavy, tiny joys matter the most.

“Now that’s how you start the day on the right foot!” the municipality added.

Commenters were also quick to commend the dancing officer they’ve come to know and love. Many called for an award for the unwavering feel-good energy he brings, others even suggested erecting a statue of him in the bay! According to one commuter, Menzi’s talents extend far beyond the moves he lays down. Apparently, he’s also a choral singer who has travelled the world!

“Very good friend of mine…Do you know he’s also a choral singer? Been overseas to perform number of times already” shares Lester Coltman.

“Even when I’m feeling down coming to work this TATTA,always bring back the energy & than I’m ready to start my day…” shares Audrey Moos.

“I usually change road if he’s not in my route just to see him” writes Rawlings Zivanayi.

“This man is a legend. If you had a bad day or a start to a bad day, you just need to watch him. He puts a smile on everyone’s faces.” comments Hannes Du Plessis.

“Give that man a statue on Standford road bridge…” says Darryn-Lee Arends.
