As World Environmental Education Day is marked, SANCCOB highlights how teaching young people about clean coastlines and conservation is shaping the future of seabird and ocean protection.

South Africa (27 January 2026) – World Environmental Education Day is a reminder that real conservation starts long before a rescue call is made; it begins with understanding the environment we live in.

For seabird conservation organisation SANCCOB, education is just as critical as rescue work. Every penguin or seabird brought into their care tells a larger story about the state of South Africa’s oceans, and that story is one they believe everyone should understand.

Through its Environmental Education programmes, SANCCOB spent 2025 engaging directly with young people, reaching 11,465 learners across the country. The focus was helping learners understand how everyday actions, like littering or protecting coastlines, directly affect seabirds and the wider marine ecosystem.

By linking clean beaches to healthy oceans and thriving wildlife, the organisation aims to show that conservation is not just about saving individual animals, but about protecting entire ecosystems. The message shared with learners goes beyond penguins, highlighting how pollution, plastic waste and environmental neglect ripple through the ocean environment.

SANCCOB says education plays a long-term role in conservation, helping to build awareness, responsibility and a sense of ownership over South Africa’s natural heritage. By teaching and inspiring young minds, they hope to shape a generation that understands its role in protecting oceans, wildlife and shared ecosystems.

As World Environmental Education Day is marked, SANCCOB’s work reinforces a simple idea, when people understand nature, they are far more likely to protect it and that protection starts with knowledge passed on today.
