If Border Collie Rescue doesn’t find a suitable home in the next few weeks, this could be the end of the organisation. Come on South Africa – the pups need us.
Centurion, South Africa (30 September 2026) – Border Collie Rescue SA (BCR) has devotedly taken in Border Collies that nobody else wanted for almost thirty years.
Doggies that were abandoned, given up, or left behind found safety there. Thousands of them have passed through BCR’s hands and gone on to loving forever homes. Now BCR has nowhere to turn.
“We have poured our hearts into saving this beautiful, brilliant Border Collie breed…” the non-profit shared on Facebook, in a public plea. “But today our hearts are completely shattered. We need a new home for X-MAS.”
For more than two decades, the rescue’s dogs have lived at a boarding kennel. That kennel has now sadly been sold, and the new owners will not keep it running as a kennel. Fewer people use kennels these days, because many now hire house sitters instead, and the business has slowly dried up.
The organisation and its four-pawed friends have to be out by 19 December 2026. That is right in the middle of the festive season, when every kennel in South Africa is already full. Nobody can take in 40 collies at that time of year.
The dogs are safe for now, and the team is working every day to keep them that way, but they have had to make some difficult choices. No new collies are being taken in until BCR knows where it will end up. This hurts, because the need is growing, with many South African farmers leaving for the USA under the refugee programme and more dogs needing help because of it…
“At the same time, we see a large intake of dogs due to many farmers taking up the refugee programme in the USA. There is such a need for the work we do but sadly, this means we will no longer take any rescue collies in till we know what comes next for us.” the organisation shares.
The team is pleading for help towards finding and setting up a new home.
“As it stands today, we have absolutely nowhere to go and we have to move by latest the 19th of December 2026. We are looking into options, but we need funding to make them a reality.”

The Sweet Bond That Turned a Stranded Township Kitten’s Life AroundThere is a piece of land in Midrand that the rescue could possibly use. It is close to their vets, who have space over Christmas, and it already has water and electricity. Everything else has to be built or fixed. It needs a security fence around the whole property, kennels or runs for 40 dogs (with gum poles, anti-jump fencing, trees and shade netting), a storage area and an office, and a general clean-up and repairs.
The plan is to use this as a temporary base, giving them room to breathe while they work out a long-term home, but funding and support are needed to make even the temporary solution happen. Alternatively, the organisation will need help in finding and securing another more suitable property. The need is dire.

After almost thirty years of second chances and happy endings, the team does not want it to finish this way, and they will not give up. Rescue collies have already survived a lot, and so has the team.

But in rescue there is no option to give us, our collies don’t give up, they have overcome so much, and neither will we.
