Animal Welfare

He was stabbed. Despite his injuries, his biggest concern was his little puppy…

Alberton, South Africa (09 March 2026) – Many of the stories we tell revolve around animals. Particularly, the love that South Africans – not all, but many – have for their pets. We celebrate the people who, with very little, would still do anything for their four-legged companions.

We’ve seen people walk, pedal and push across great distances when pets need training or welfare care. We’ve seen them use their last cents to make a life-saving call for their paw-babies. We’ve seen young ones surrender their animals knowing that a better life would be waiting for them. We’ve also witnessed that love come right back. Four-legged companions who would stand right in the line of fire to protect their family.

This is one of those stories.

“On Monday night our local CPF received a call to assist a homeless man who had been stabbed. When they arrived, despite his injuries, his biggest concern wasn’t himself — it was his little puppy.” shares Brackenhurst Veterinary Hospital.

While the man – who has not been named – was rushed off to hospital, the security company that had responded to the call brought the puppy to the veterinary hospital in Brackenhurst to be looked after.

“We vaccinated and dewormed her, and she enjoyed a warm bath at our grooming parlour.” they said.

One thing that became clear while the puppy was in their care, was the love that one man had for this little soul. While hospitalised and recovering from his injuries, he called every single day to check in.

“This is an owner who may not have much, but the love he has for his puppy is undeniable. He phoned us every day from the hospital asking how she was doing, and the happiness when they were finally reunited was truly heartwarming.” the veterinary hospital shared.

Here’s the photo of them reunited:

Some people walk tough roads and fight unimaginable battles, yet still remain uncalloused when it comes to loving and caring for animals. That says something beautiful about humans that we will always celebrate.

Moving forward, Brackenhurst Veterinary Hospital, together with its NPO Grace Fund, will help care for a puppy who might not have all the material comforts, but still has all the love in the world.

“Together with our NPO Grace Fund, we will continue caring for her by providing all her puppy vaccinations and arranging for her sterilisation when she is old enough.” they veterinary hospital shares. “Sometimes love isn’t about what you have — it’s about the bond you share.”
