A haircut gone wrong, a sense of humour and a filter have turned Dani’s TikTok into one of the internet’s favourite feel-good comedy moments this week.
South Africa (15 March 2026) – A bad haircut can ruin your day. A truly bad haircut can ruin your week. But in South Africa, a bad haircut can apparently turn into comedy gold… and the internet is absolutely loving it.
Dani, known online as @iamdanihavingacrisis, has gone viral over the past week after sharing the story of her “less-than-favoured” haircut. What started as a slightly traumatic trip to the salon quickly turned into one of the funniest TikTok series doing the rounds right now, especially after viewers started pointing out that her new look bore an uncanny resemblance to politician Helen Zille’s signature hairstyle. And instead of hiding under a hat for the next three months (as some suggested), Dani leaned straight into it. The result is a string of videos, a flood of laughter across social media and a reminder of just how brilliant South African humour can be.

Dani’s videos had already been popping up on my TikTok FYP for months, but when I started seeing this haircut saga spreading across Twitter and Facebook too (from other people sharing her videos), I knew I had to chat to her and find out more.

Dani didn’t exactly want this haircut; she had asked to get a bob, but when she saw her new “do”, the TikTokker didn’t sugarcoat the experience.
“Pain and despair, honestly. Mostly because I have had long hair forever and I had been building up to chopping it all off. I found someone extremely reputable with many glowing reviews but I guess he was off his game that day. I cried on the way home, after I tipped and said that I loved it.”
To make matters slightly more complicated, Dani admits she didn’t exactly have a clear view of what was happening during the haircut. In her defence, she had taken off her glasses while the hairdresser was working, which meant she couldn’t properly see what was going on in the mirror… although she had a growing suspicion that things might not be going according to plan.
“I debuted the new haircut in a now-deleted TikTok, and within 5 minutes, one of my followers commented: ‘Please run for the mayor of Johannesburg!’ I am a big believer in laughing through the pain, so I figured I would just run with it. It took a while to find the perfect filter but once I put it on, it was go time.”
If you watched the “Roast of Helen Zille“, or have seen her recent social media videos, you will know Helen appreciates a good joke and collective humour (especially when it brings South Africans together). And so, what followed was Dani’s “Helen” era… a series of videos that leaned fully into the joke of a haircut she “wasn’t expecting”, complete with the filter and tongue-in-cheek commentary. The internet responded immediately, with thousands of South Africans piling into the comments with the kind of humour that only locals can deliver.
“May your hair never grow back😂”
“Dani, this is easily one of the funniest things you’ve ever posted. Proud of you for leaning into the hair debacle and keeping us laughing! We love you! #Amanda! 🤣🤣🤣🤣”
“This haircut is the best thing to ever happen to my fyp😭”
“Find a pothole to swim in like she did 😂😂😂😂”
“It looks more like Henrietta Lange from NCIS.”
So far, Dani says the response has been overwhelming.
“The reception has been incredibly strong. So far, I have received just under a million views on the haircut videos and have garnered many new followers who are now friends. I can’t keep up with the comments but so far not one has been negative.”
And there have been many positive comments.
“I can’t be the only one that think’s it’s cute. It’s confident. It’s giving “I can critique you because I am an expert in a niche field” vibe.”
“Am I the only one that actually thinks it’s really cute?”
“If it helps, I’d never seen you before and I think it looks quite cute! It might be partly the contrast that’s a shock to the system.”
Of course, South Africans didn’t hold back when it came to the jokes. Some of Dani’s favourite comments include:
“Why is your hairdresser cutting your hair in advance?”
“Where is your hairdresser located so I can open a hat shop across the road.”
“Take your hairdresser to the ombudsman.”
“Why are your bangs so afraid of your eyebrows?”
“Lay low for a while.”
“Completely unrelated, but have I told you that you look cute in a hat?”
“If you close both eyes the haircut actually looks perfect.”
“I thought this was a DA campaign video.”
“Chomi, if you walk past fast, I promise you we won’t notice.”
But beyond the laughs and viral moments, Dani believes the reaction says something deeper about who we are as South Africans.
“South Africans have the best sense of humour in the world. I say that as someone who is well-travelled. We are really good at taking the bad and turning it into something we can all laugh about. The only reason why I am not completely devastated about this haircut is the absolutely hilarious comments and support I have received.”
It’s a sentiment that many South Africans will recognise instantly. We face challenges, frustrations and sometimes haircuts that we might not have asked for… but we also have an uncanny ability to turn everyday mishaps into shared laughter. And perhaps that’s why Dani’s story has struck such a chord online. What could have remained a personal disaster for her has become a moment of connection, and humour… and thousands of strangers bonding over a fringe that may or may not be plotting its own escape.
Before wrapping up our chat, Dani shared a message for South Africans.
“If we (South Africans) band together, we have the power to make our country a better place. We are filled to the brim with potential and possibility and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. Now more than ever, we need to listen to those whose voices lift us up.”
A viral haircut might not seem like big news but the laughter it sparked has travelled across timelines, feeds and friend groups across the country. And if there’s one thing this whole saga proves, it’s that South Africans have an extraordinary ability to turn even a haircut into a little shared humour.
