Call to Melville's People to Pick Up Their Paintbrushes Ahead of The Happening

Melville is gearing up for another celebration of creativity and community with the second Happening. Ahead of the big day, the community is called to show up and spread happiness on its streets!

Melville, South Africa (20 March 2026) – Ahead of The Happening on 28 March 2026, organisers are putting out the call for volunteers and donations to help give 7th Street and 4th Avenue in Melville a little TLC before the big day.

In the lead-up to the last event two years ago, artists and community members helped make Melville beautiful. Artwork was created on pillars, walls got new murals, and even dustbins gained a sparkle of art!

In its return, The Happening is once again calling on the kindness and creativity of its colourful community.

“For The Happening in March 2024, artists and community members got together and volunteered to do some painting touch-ups, tag removal, some did artwork on pillars, and just some overall TLC on 4th Avenue and 7th Street. It was a great build-up to The Happening in 2024.” shares organisers of the event. “We’d love to get volunteers to participate again…”

The Happening will be a totally free, family-friendly street takeover inspired by the ethos of AfrikaBurn. The line-up brings live music, street theatre, markets, art workshops, roaming performers, mutant vehicles, and even a colourful Community Parade. Everyone is welcome – residents, visitors, artists, families and anyone who wants to be part of something joyful and alive.

The clean-up ahead of the shindig will be hosted over two days, before the official event on 28 March.

Every little act of TLC will help brighten up the neighbourhood and create lasting ripples of happiness beyond the event.

If you can’t volunteer, donations of cleaning products, paint, paint brushes and anything that can be used in the clean-up will be put to good use.

Donations can be dropped off at Ziggy’s Pet Pamperium, 11D 7th Street, and volunteers are warmly welcome to join on either of the two clean-up days below, at The Old Dukes Burgers, next to Joanna’s Melt Bar.
