What started as a routine commute to work through the streets of Robertson ended as a life-changing encounter for Jacob and Kanal.
Robertson, South Africa (14 April 2026) – For most, the morning commute is a rushed, early-morning blur. A race against the clock to beat the traffic and arrive on time. But on his way to work recently, Jacob Plaatjies was stopped in his tracks by something entirely unexpected.
He heard faint cries coming from a nearby water channel, and instead of going about his commute, he chose to stop.
What he found was a tiny puppy, struggling to stay afloat and moments away from drowning. Without hesitation, Jacob climbed down and rescued him.
Once safe in his care, he named the pup Kanal (Afrikaans for “channel”) – a reminder of where their story began.
From that moment, the two became inseparable.
When John Moore Animal Welfare (JMAW) heard about Jacob’s act of kindness, they stepped in to support the pair. They ensured Kanal received sterilisation, vaccinations, deworming, tick and flea treatment, as well as food, a harness, and a warm blanket.
Established in 2017, JMAW is a nonprofit that provides ongoing primary veterinary care services to underprivileged communities in Robertson and the surrounding areas.
“Stories like Jacob and Kanal remind us that one small act of kindness can change everything,” says Michelle from JMAW.
“This is what compassion in action looks like.”
Today, Kanal is no longer a “channel puppy” fighting against the current; he is a thriving symbol of what happens when we choose to look closer rather than walk past.
In a world where many walk past, Jacob chose to stop. And because of that, a life was saved – and a beautiful bond was born!
