In many communities, keeping a pet safe without a fence is a constant worry. But for the Mbhense family, that weight has finally been lifted thanks to Funda Nenja’s Fencing Project.

Mpophomeni, South Africa (15 April 2026) – In many South African townships, informal settlements, villages, and farms, protecting a beloved pet within the safe confines of a fence is hard to come by. For many families, “home” isn’t defined by high walls or sturdy gates, but by the shared resilience of a community where there are little to no boundaries and resources are thin.

This openness brings a heavy heart for owners who live in constant fear of the road, the elements, or the stray dangers of the night. It’s a hard reality one family knows well and has had to live with daily… until recently.

The Mbhense family, residing in the township of Mpophomeni, are the latest beneficiary of Funda Nenja’s Fencing Project, which assists responsible dog owners in keeping their furry companions safe.

“Eight-year-old Nonjabulo joined the dog school with Puppy in April 2025. She is accompanied by her grandmother, who helps our team members to pack dog food while waiting for classes to finish,” Funda Nenja shares.

Since being involved with the organisation and learning all about proper canine care, the family has purchased a kennel and has demonstrated that they truly care for their two dogs.

“However, despite their best efforts, the dogs kept escaping from the property, causing great concern for their safety, so Funda Nenja has assisted by installing a dog-proof fence.”

Mrs Nokwanda Mbhense was moved by the support that has replaced their stress with peace of mind. In a touching letter to the team expressing her gratitude, she wrote:

“We, the Mbhense family, would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for installing a new fence at our home. Your quick response and effort in replacing the short old fence that our dog used to climb on have brought us great peace of mind. We’ve been part of your wonderful organisation since last year, and your continued support means a lot to us. Thank you for your kindness and for always being there for us and our pets.”

Witnessing this family’s gratitude has warmed the hearts of many online and offers a beautiful reminder of why organisations like Funda Nenja matter. Now, their furry companions can zoom, play, and nap in the sun within the safety of their own yard!
