One woman, two wheels, and a heart full of love for the dogs society often forgets. Sarah Van Heerden has completed the ride of a lifetime across South Africa for the dogs asking to be seen.

Wellington, South Africa (28 April 2026) – For the brown shelter dogs who so often aren’t looked at or considered, Sarah Van Heerden has literally gone the distance to rewrite their future.

As the Operations Manager for the Kloof & Highway SPCA, Sarah pedalled across the finish line this past Friday, completing her epic journey in the gruelling Race Across South Africa.

Sarah cycled an astonishing 2 000 kilometres in just 11 days and 7 hours and has claimed the title of First Lady.

As shared by her SPCA, she rode with the spirit of every “invisible” dog in her heart, proving that even the quietest, unassuming souls are worth fighting for.

Through violent thunderstorms and flooding. Through the relentless, blazing South African sun. Through day and night, exhaustion, pain, and every possible challenge thrown at her – she faced it all.

When her body ached, and her resolve was tested, Sarah dug deep and pushed harder, driven by one powerful motivation: The Brown Dogs.

Every pedal stroke, every painful kilometre, every emotional high and low was for what lies deepest in her heart: The animals.

She has managed to raise over R34,850 so far, which will all go towards sterilising as many brown dogs as possible, thereby giving them a chance at healthier, safer lives and preventing future generations from suffering unseen.

“Sarah, we are beyond proud of you. What a privilege it is to have someone so fearless, so selfless, and so determined fighting for animals who cannot speak for themselves. Always,” Kloof & Highway SPCA congratulated.

For braving the wild terrain and riding with heart for the overlooked, we salute you, Sarah. You are a true champion for the underdog!
