At just 14, STEM prodigy Isabella Ankiah secured a merit-based spot on Team South Africa for NASA’s prestigious ISSDC finals. And while a strict age rule means her historic trip to Florida is deferred until next year, this unstoppable young innovator is just getting started!

Cape Town, South Africa (04 June 2026) – In a massive win for South African youth in STEM, local learner Isabella Ankiah has secured a spot on Team South Africa to compete at the prestigious International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

Isabella became one of the high achievers who excelled at the South African Space Design Competition (ZASDC) finals held in Cape Town in March, as shared previously.

Representing Parklands College, Isabella was thrown into an intense, 24-hour engineering simulation alongside more than 100 students from across the country. Tasked with designing “Alaskol,” a futuristic lunar settlement, the teams had to calculate everything from radiation protection to the financial logistics of moon exports.

Isabella’s natural leadership quickly stood out. She was appointed president of her multi-school team, “Kepler Automation,” guiding a group of strangers through the high-pressure marathon of creative problem-solving.

Out of the competing field, Isabella was selected as one of only eight elite learners to represent Team SA internationally.

A Bittersweet Technicality

However, her incredible achievement comes with a unique twist.

Despite completely outperforming the competition and securing her spot on merit, Isabella is only 14 years old. Because the official NASA-hosted international finals enforce a strict minimum age requirement of 15, Isabella is technically too young to fly out and participate this July.

Instead of letting the age barrier slow her down, Isabella is treating this as a launchpad. Her guaranteed spot will safely carry over, meaning she will officially make the journey to Florida next year once she hits the minimum age milestone.

Excelling on the Robotics Grid to the Netball Court

While commanding space simulations is impressive enough, Isabella is already an accomplished leader on Earth as the captain of Hyperion Bots (Team 18011), Parklands College’s champion robotics team.

Under her captaincy, the Hyperion Bots qualified for the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) World Championships in Houston, Texas. Competing against the absolute best youth engineering minds on the planet, Isabella led her team to an incredible international milestone, bringing home the prestigious Reach Award (2nd Place) in the Ross Division on the global stage.

The Reach Award celebrates teams that demonstrate exceptional engineering prowess and successfully spread the message of FIRST robotics to broader communities.

What makes these accomplishments even more impressive is that Isabella balances her intensive elite-level STEM commitments with an exceptional athletic and academic profile. Proving she is just as formidable on the sports field as she is behind a computer, Isabella was recently selected for the Western Cape Netball trials.

All of this is achieved while maintaining a flawless academic record, currently ranking 2nd in her grade at Parklands College.

The Road to Florida

While her older teammates head to the Kennedy Space Centre this July to be integrated into simulated aerospace companies alongside students from over 20 countries, Isabella will be preparing to headline the next cohort.

Her phenomenal multi-disciplinary achievements highlight the world-class innovation, technical talent, and athletic versatility being nurtured within South Africa’s classrooms as these young minds prepare to build the future – both on Earth and beyond!
