A Cape Town woman’s search for her missing cellphone became a powerful reminder that compassion and selflessness still exist in everyday life.
Cape Town, South Africa (10 June 2026) – What began as a frantic search for a missing cellphone ended as a powerful reminder of the kindness that still exists.
For race walker and event organiser Fundiswa Sandi, a Saturday morning athletics event at Youngsfield took an unexpected turn when she realised her cellphone was missing shortly after completing her race.
At first, she believed she had simply misplaced it somewhere on the grounds. But as panic set in and attempts to locate the device failed, she approached a group of parents at a nearby youth soccer tournament for help.
Among them was Gavin Cohen, who would later help her.
Fundiswa had never met Gavin before that day. Yet when she explained her situation, he immediately offered to help.
“He was calm while I was panicking. He didn’t know me at all, but he took the time to help me figure out where my phone was.”
Using the iPhone’s tracking feature, the pair discovered that the phone was no longer at the sports grounds. Instead, its location appeared to be in Athlone, several kilometres away.
Despite having plans of his own and a 13-year-old son waiting with him, Gavin chose to continue assisting.
“I could see she was in distress and had no way of contacting anyone,” Gavin said. “If I see someone who needs help, it comes naturally to me to try and assist. It’s simply humanity.”
The pair travelled toward the location indicated by the tracking system, only to find themselves in an unfamiliar area that Gavin recognised as potentially dangerous.
Concerned for Fundiswa’s safety, he encouraged her to seek assistance from law enforcement officers who happened to pass by.
The search eventually led to a police station, where the person who had taken possession of the phone admitted to having it and returned it.
But for Fundiswa, recovering the device was only part of the story.
“What touched me wasn’t finding the phone,” she said. “It was everything that happened before that. A complete stranger sacrificed his time, involved his son, and helped me without expecting anything in return.”
The experience left a lasting impression on both of them. For Gavin, the incident also became a teaching moment for his son, Danny.
“It was important for him to see what helping others looks like,” he said. “In today’s world, many people are focused on their own challenges and often choose not to get involved. Sometimes, though, a small act of kindness can make a big difference.”
Fundiswa believes the experience carries a message that extends far beyond a lost cellphone.
“In a world where we hear so many negative stories, this reminded me that good people still exist,” she said. “If we can return to our humanity, listen to our hearts and help one another when we can, our communities would be much stronger.”
