When a community unites for a common cause, real change happens. In a powerful two-day initiative, Atlantic Fire teamed up with Imizamo Yethu community leaders and residents to tackle a growing fire threat in the area and reclaim their safety.
Cape Town, South Africa (11 June 2026) – In the densely populated informal settlement of Mayitshe, many families have found their own little piece to call home.
It is a community characterised by tightly packed homes, narrow pathways, dead ends, and limited access for emergency vehicles. Combined with ongoing waste and sanitation challenges, these conditions create a devastating fire risk for thousands of residents in the area.
Recognising that a single spark could race through hundreds of homes within minutes, while piles of rubbish, sewage, and waste block access routes and further increase the danger, the volunteer firefighters of Atlantic Fire Services teamed up with Imizamo Yethu community leaders and residents to tackle this growing threat.
Over two days, they removed more than 400 bags of rubbish and sanitary waste from a polluted greenbelt on the outskirts of the settlement.
“The conditions were horrific. The smell was so overwhelming that some volunteers became physically ill while helping with the cleanup. But the result was worth it,” Atlantic Fire said.
By the end of the gruelling task, the collaborative cleanup effort had created a 6-metre fire break alongside the settlement, helping to slow the spread of potential fires and improve community safety.
“A huge thank you to every community member who rolled up their sleeves and joined us. Safer communities are built when communities come together,” Atlantic Fire added.
