Living with cerebral palsy, Roman Herman has spent 25 years redefining what it means to navigate the world, meeting daily obstacles with quiet resilience. But now the wheelchair that once gave him freedom has become his greatest barrier.
Cape Town, South Africa (11 June 2026) – Growth is usually something we celebrate, but for 25-year-old Roman Herman, it has come with an unfair cost.
As a young man living with cerebral palsy, Roman has always approached life with a unique grace, adapting to a world not built for him with incredible strength and a smile that lights up a room.
He is ready to continue moving forward, but his equipment hasn’t kept up.
The Hands4Change Outreach Projects, a community-based non-profit organisation serving vulnerable children, youth, and families in Ocean View, is currently rallying public support to help Roman secure a specialised wheelchair.
“Roman has outgrown his current wheelchair, which no longer provides the support he needs for safe mobility, posture, and daily comfort. Following an assessment by CE Mobility Wheelchairs, a specialised wheelchair has been approved and partially sponsored,” says Diona Kindo from Hands4Change Outreach Projects.
Thanks to the generosity of the wheelchair and seating specialists company, R18,129.92 has already been covered through sponsorships and discounts.
“We now need to raise the final R5,300 before the quotation expires on 8 July 2026,” Diona explains.
Every single day has become harder for Roman as poor posture, strained movement, and compromised mobility take a toll on his health. For Roman, getting this improved mobility aid is about so much more than just a new wheelchair. It is dignity, independence, comfort, and the opportunity to participate more fully in life.
Through a crowdfunding campaign, R2,900 has already been raised, with just R2,400 needed to reach the full total.
