Cupcakes of Hope brought the ultimate Bafana Bafana “gees” to local paediatric wards, filling the corridors with bright smiles, dancing nurses, and pure matchday joy for these brave fighters.
South Africa (12 June 2026) – They usually visit paediatric wards bearing cupcakes and sweet treats, but this week the wonderful volunteers of Cupcakes of Hope surprised young patients undergoing cancer treatment with Bafana Bafana shirts, soccer balls and flags to get them in the “gees” for last night’s opening game!
The thoughtful surprise brought the brightest smiles to the children, who were beyond excited to get into soccer supporter’s mode. Even the nurses joined in the celebrations, creating moments of joy and excitement in the hospital corridors.
A particularly heartwarming moment reminded the Cupcakes of Hope team why these visits and small acts of kindness matter so much.
“One little girl, who had been diagnosed with a brain tumour, had lost the ability to speak and had very limited use of her hands. As our team visited her room, they gently placed a small South African flag into her tiny hand. To everyone’s amazement, she began waving the flag. Her dad stood beside her, watching in disbelief as tears filled his eyes,” shared Sandy from Cupcakes of Hope.
In that moment, a little flag became so much more than a symbol of support for a football team. It became a hair-raising glimmer of hope.
“A reminder that joy can still find its way into the hardest of circumstances, and that sometimes the smallest gestures can create the most meaningful memories,” Sandy said.
June is also Cancer Survivors Month, and earlier this month, the charity celebrated with some of its incredible childhood cancer survivors. One very special survivor, Ofentse, had this message for Bafana Bafana:

“As a childhood cancer survivor, I know what it means to face tough battles, to keep believing when things are hard, and to never give up. Thank you for inspiring all of us to keep fighting and to dream big. I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way tonight. Go out there, give it your all, and make South Africa proud!
