The Welgemoedts need South Africans to rally for their sunshine – Ryder. Alone, they cannot afford the specialised equipment he needs, and his quality of life depends on it.
Margate, South Africa (23 June 2026) – Ryder’s dad describes him as the warmest ray of sunshine on a cold, damp day. Everyone he greets is gifted with a smile. He’s an absolute joy, even despite his diagnosis of cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
Because of his condition, Ryder’s everyday life as a happy, six-year-old boy comes with challenges. He can’t walk, crawl, or sit independently. One parent is always present to care for him, and they do so with all the love and support they can muster.
Beyond requiring around-the-clock care, Ryder also needs new specialised equipment to support his mobility and day-to-day life.
As a single income household and limited-to-no coverage from their medical aid, Ryder’s parents – Michiel and Claire – have made the humbling decision to ask for help to secure that equipment.
Without it, they cannot give Ryder the support he so desperately needs.
The Welgemoedts have started an online crowdfund in the hopes that, with enough support, they can purchase a new stroller, standing frame and bathing chair – all tools that will make life much simpler and less demanding for the little boy and his parents as he grows bigger.
“We’ve started a BackaBuddy campaign to raise funds for specialised equipment that Ryder urgently needs, including a supportive stroller, a standing frame, and a bath chair. These items have been recommended by his occupational therapist and neurologist, but unfortunately they aren’t covered by medical aid in any meaningful way and are simply beyond our means.”
The fundraiser was launched earlier this month, with the goal of raising R111,130 to cover the equipment Ryder requires. They’ve shared the call for help with their circles, and have raised just over R6,000 toward that goal already. Thirteen wonderful donors have made it happen.
Still, the family has a long way to go before they can make any meaningful difference for Ryder. In their time of need, they look toward the support and kindness South Africans to help them through.
