Beyond providing vital breast cancer care, Project Flamingo recently brightened and transformed several rooms at Groote Schuur Hospital to ensure patients and clinicians step into an environment filled with the dignity and comfort they deserve.

Cape Town, South Africa (07 July 2026) – When illness strikes, our natural instinct is to wish a loved one a swift recovery. Yet, where that healing takes place matters just as much as the journey back to good health itself.

One of the most overlooked parts of healing is the space in which it happens.

Project Flamingo knows this well. It is the core inspiration behind their “Make Room for Her” campaign – an initiative born from the belief that dignified healthcare rooms play a significant role in a patient’s healing and well-being.

Over and above its impactful work of providing timely, holistic and compassionate breast cancer care to patients in public hospitals, it also helps uplift the physical spaces where patients receive treatment.

Recently, the team refurbished, painted, and decorated a pre-op consulting space, a patient waiting room, and a seminar room at Groote Schuur Hospital – spaces built not just for treatment, but for the clinicians and patients at the coalface every day.

“This isn’t just a hospital. It’s a place of healing, and it should reflect the worth and dignity of every patient who walks through its doors for treatment,” Project Flamingo emphasised.

The Make Room for Her campaign first started with putting curtains around hospital beds in the Eastern Cape, so that women could have a moment of privacy in their most vulnerable moments. From there, it grew into something so much bigger.

Today, vital spaces at Groote Schuur are brighter, more welcoming and accommodating for the patients who walk in seeking treatment and care. To know that they will feel welcome, seen, and valued is the point of it all for this hardworking team that considers healing as dignity and dignity non-negotiable.

The organisation recognised and thanked every role player who showed up, lent a hand, raised funds and supported the hospital rooms upgrades project to see it through to completion.

“None of this happened on its own. It took a community- our donors, our contracting partner, our volunteers, who welcomed this vision and made room for it, and every single person on our team who pushed this project from an idea to a reality. To everyone who gave time, funding, expertise, or simply belief in why this mattered: thank you. This space exists because you showed up for it.”
