In high spirits for clean streets, a group of WILDTRUST interns were joined by other envirochamps for a clean-up and to sound the call for the community of Mbazwana to play their part in reducing litter and the use of plastic this Plastic Free July.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (08 July 2026) – Plastic Free July is a major global movement where millions of people pledge to reduce or entirely cut out their use of single-use plastics for the month of July.
Dating back to 2021, the movement started on a small scale with just a handful of people, but it has since grown into a well-recognised annual campaign.
On 1 July, WILDTRUST kicked off Plastic Free July in Mbazwana, a small town in KwaZulu-Natal’s uMkhanyakude District.
In high spirits and vigour, 10 WILDTRUST Youth Employment Services (YES) interns, joined by a Living Lakes Biodiversity Project (LLBCP) trainee and their supervisor Nonkululeko Nsele, took to the Mbazwana community streets armed with Plastic Free July posters and bin bags.

Together, this team cleaned up litter across the community, even tackling illegal dumping sites. Their efforts filled five black bin bags of waste, which were then sorted, with compostable items set aside for reuse and cartons collected by a community member for recycling.
“This is just the beginning! The team will continue their clean-up once every week until 31 July, making Mbazwana cleaner and greener for all,” Wildlands shared online.
The environmental organisation is further challenging all communities to join this movement towards cleaner, plastic-free spaces by taking action and gathering for environmental action.
“You have until the 31st of July to make your mark. Post and tag our pages so we can continue to drive our collective vision of a ‘Thriving and Resilient World.”
