For over 200 vulnerable babies and children in Hazelmere, Sinakekele isn’t just a charity. It’s their entire world, offering safety, love, and a brighter future when they need it most.
Verulam, South Africa (27 July 2026) – In the heart of Hazelmere, Verulam, Sinakekele Children offers a safe haven for abandoned and orphaned babies waiting for their forever families.
Here, a dedicated team provides a safe, loving environment for babies and toddlers as they await adoption, foster placement, or reunification with their biological families. Situated in a rural community, Sinakekele also strives to assist its neighbours through various outreach programmes.
For many years, Sinakekele has been sustained by committed monthly donors alongside the generosity of individuals, churches, businesses, and trusts providing once-off gifts. Historically, these once-off donations have bridged the gap when monthly support fell short.
However, for the past three consecutive months, these critical once-off donations have dropped significantly.
With each passing week, the team finds themselves asking ‘what to keep?’ and ‘what to let go?’ – questions that have been weighing heavily on every caregiving heart.
“Despite our ongoing fundraising efforts, the needed once-off funding that has carried us through difficult seasons in the past has simply not materialised, leaving us facing a monthly shortfall that we can no longer absorb,” shares Ruth Grobler, Sinakekele Children Founder.
To continue providing the care and services children depend on, Sinakekele urgently needs an additional R150,000 in committed monthly funding.
“R150,000 may sound overwhelming, but it becomes achievable when shared. If just 300 people or corporates committed to R500 per month, or 150 people or corporates committed to R1,000 per month, this crisis would be resolved,” Ruth says.
Every day, Sinakekele stands in the gap for 12 abandoned and vulnerable babies, provides early learning support for 46 young learners, and opens its community centre to 150 local children. For these little ones, this space is their entire world.

Every single day, 46 little learners from an impoverished, disadvantaged community receive the early childhood education that lays the foundation for their future,” Ruth explains.
For these children, there is no alternative ECD centre. Without Sinakekele, many would begin formal schooling without the vital foundation that early learning provides.
“We are their teachers, their mentors and their biggest cheerleaders as they prepare for the next chapter of their education.”
In a community where poverty and negative influences are an everyday reality, Sinakekele provides opportunities vulnerable children would otherwise never have: a safe space, educational support, sports coaching, resources, encouragement and caring adult role models.
Even in a season of financial drought, this team of caregivers shows up with love, compassion and a commitment that builds confidence, resilience and the belief that their future can be different. But commitment alone cannot pay salaries, buy food, provide education or keep our doors open.
Without urgent, sustainable monthly funding, the organisation will be forced to make decisions that it should never have to make.
