Tails are wagging in Tshwane after a local group’s SPCA fun run has collected FIVE TONNES of dog and cat food!
Tshwane, South Africa (02 November 2026) – Sometimes, gin shots do lead to good things!
The Tshwane-based running group has done it again, turning its annual fun run into five tonnes of dog and cat food for the Tshwane SPCA’s Waltloo Branch.
The run, which started at Pretoria High School Old Boys Club and finished at the Waltloo SPCA on Saturday, drew a large crowd of supporters, all contributing donations for the local animal welfare organisation.

By the finish line, the squad had collected an entire truckload of support for the SPCA.
“Once again, the amazing GIN SQUAD has shown us what a difference a caring community can make!” the SPCA shared on Facebook after the event. Addressing the squad and its supporters, it wrote: “Your continued kindness and commitment year after year mean more to us than words can express. Because of people like you, we can continue caring for the precious animals who depend on us every single day.”

The sociable group of running enthusiasts says it is not ‘just another running club’. Instead, the squad is driven by a passion for supporting those in need and turning the energy and generosity of family, friends and fellow runners into meaningful action that eases suffering in its communities…
And they do gin shots along the way!
The Gin Squad hosts three to four major charitable running and fitness events each year. Last year’s 10km fun run collected more than six tonnes of dog food for the Tshwane SPCA.
This year, the group has also taken part in several other charity events, including the recent Daredevil Run in support of cancer awareness.

The Gin Squad’s event on Saturday was a wonderful example of community spirit that we love to see! When one runner was injured along the route, fellow participants rallied around him and added wheels to the challenge so he could still cross the finish line.

Five tonnes of food will help keep bowls full for countless dogs and cats in the SPCA’s care. When a community comes together to run (and do shots!) every step can make a meaningful impact.
