Melkbosstrand has just gained a beautiful new beacon of hope with the opening of the Sylvia Kirstein Library and Therapy Centre – a special space dedicated to nurturing local children while honouring the memory of a beloved teacher.
Melkbosstrand, South Africa (30 July 2026) – A new beacon of hope has taken root in Melkbosstrand to support the town’s youngest and most vulnerable residents.
The Melkbos Care Centre has officially opened the Sylvia Kirstein Library and Therapy Centre, marking a significant milestone in its mission to uplift local children and their families.
As a deeply cherished charity, the Centre has long been dedicated to empowering youth through early childhood education, nutritious meals, transport, homework help, life-skills development, and a safe, nurturing space where every child is encouraged to reach their full potential.
This new facility, named in loving memory of Sylvia Kirstein, a beloved former teacher at Van Riebeeckstrand Primary School, transforms the centre into both a vibrant library to spark young minds and a dedicated space for gentle therapeutic care.
It was established following Kirstein’s tragic death during a home invasion in 2025. In the wake of her passing, friends and community members placed flowers at the scene to honour her memory. However, as the flowers withered in the sun, the idea emerged to create a more lasting tribute through donations.
A crowdfunding campaign was launched, allowing supporters to contribute financially instead of flowers. The response was overwhelming, with generous donations from individuals and companies enabling the construction of the new centre, complete with enhanced security for the premises.
Melkbosstrand Trauma Therapist, Lone Neckel, says the decision to incorporate a dedicated therapy space felt especially fitting.
“The peaceful and calming environment now allows volunteer psychologists and play therapists to meet with children needing emotional support,” she said.
The Sylvia Kirstein Library and Therapy Centre is far more than a collection of books. It serves as a sanctuary where children can discover the joy of reading, develop a love of learning, and find comfort, hope, and encouragement. Volunteer professionals help children heal, grow, and build resilience in a space where they feel safe, heard, and cared for.

The Centre continues to stand as a place of hope, offering holistic support that extends well beyond traditional education to nurture the emotional and intellectual wellbeing of every child it serves. It raises funds through Gently Loved, a second-hand shop in Melkbosstrand, which relies on donations.
