Through compassion and a community spirit that refuses to leave the elderly behind, the ‘A Night for Sight’ fundraiser by Hello Poppy helped fund cataract surgeries that have brought 11 seniors back into a world full of clarity, connection, and joy.
Johannesburg, South Africa (30 July 2026) – Growing older should never mean growing invisible. Guided by this belief, a group of dedicated doctors, elderly care advocates, and a supportive community recently joined forces to give deserving senior patients the priceless gift of restored sight.
It’s often said that wonderful things happen when a community unites, and that exact spirit drove ‘A Night for Sight ‘, a fundraising initiative hosted by Hello Poppy in support of the Eye Wish Foundation.
In South Africa, many people relying on the public healthcare system wait years for cataract surgery – a heartbreaking reality faced by countless seniors across the country. Fortunately, through the extraordinary work of the Eye Wish Foundation, led by Dr Katie Rafferty, deserving patients are receiving these life-changing operations free of charge.
Having learned about this impactful work, the idea of restoring sight for elders appealed to newly formed and KZN-based non-profit company Hello Poppy, whose mission is to support the emotional well-being of elders by creating opportunities for connection, purpose and dignity for this vulnerable group.
Led by media personality Jane Linley-Thomas, the Hello Poppy team sprang into action to raise enough money to restore the sight of four deserving elderly patients.
What happened next exceeded everyone’s expectations.
Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of every sponsor, donor and guest who attended the fundraising evening event in Durban, enough funding was raised for not only four patients, but 11 cataract operations!
With the generous support of the Johannesburg Eye Hospital and Dr Rafferty and her team, these surgeries took place on Friday, 24 July.
By the end of the day, 11 deserving patients were given the priceless gift of restored sight, and the opportunity to be able to connect with their loved ones, community, purpose, and dignity in ways that will no doubt feed their emotional well-being.
