Since 1983, Alfred has been so much more than a groundsman at Parktown Boys’ High. He’s poured 44 years of love and dedication into preparing fields and creating the stage where memories, traditions, and lifelong friendships are made.
Johannesburg, South Africa (04 August 2026) – Any day is a good day to celebrate an everyday hero, and Parktown Boys’ High School took that to heart recently. The school paused to honour Mr Alfred Mokoro, a man who, for 44 years of loyal service, has been so much more than just a groundsman to the Parktown community.
Often seen sporting his work overalls and the warmest smile, Alfred has been a familiar face, a quiet leader, and one of the people who has helped shape the home that generations of Parktown boys have been privileged to experience.
It was back in 1983 when he first walked into the Parktown premises and was taken aback by how beautiful and well-maintained the school was. It was also from that moment that he made a promise to himself that he would stay for a long time.
Forty-four years later, that promise has become an extraordinary legacy, the school shares. From preparing cricket pitches to marking rugby fields before every Saturday fixture, Alfred has taken immense pride in creating the stage where memories are made, traditions are upheld, and lifelong friendships begin.
To Alfred, Parktown has never just been a workplace. It’s been a community built on teamwork, respect and friendship.
“One of the first things visitors notice is how neat and well-maintained the grounds are,” he says.
“I’m proud to have played a part in that.”
Alfred acknowledges that Parktown Boys High is a school that teaches young boys the value of respect, discipline and obedience. That it shapes them into grounded, responsible men who know what they want from life.
His advice to anyone joining the Parktown family is simple: work hard, take pride in what you do, listen carefully, and always respect the people around you.
