Handmade Warmth Brings Winter Comfort to Hundreds of Little Learners

Thanks to a heartfelt collaboration between volunteers, generous donors and caring seniors, hundreds of little preschoolers supported by The Domino Foundation are receiving handmade warmth and comfort.

Durban, South Africa (07 August 2026) – For many children, being ready for school depends on far more than age. Household income can play a major role, and children from low-income homes are often the most disadvantaged. Without access to strong early learning support, the long-term effects can shape a child’s confidence, development and future opportunities.

This is where The Domino Foundation steps in. With many crèches operating as informal micro-enterprises, it equips centre owners with essential business and administrative skills to help them run financially sustainable, well-managed facilities. The foundation also trains educators and teaching aides in early childhood education practices, provides educational materials, and supports children with high-protein meals.

When a volunteer group from a major financial services provider heard about the 1,447 little preschoolers and 31 crèches supported by Domino, they were moved to do something meaningful.

The group rallied together, matching their time with generous monetary donations for the Foundation. They also reached out to residents at an old-age home in Athlone Park, who lovingly set to work making cosy beanies, scarves and blankets for children at early learning centres.

Their combined effort brought warmth in a practical and heartfelt way: 234 blankets, along with matching crocheted beanies and scarves, were delivered to several Early Childhood Development centres partnering with The Domino Foundation in the Amanzimtoti area.

Cheryl Dann, Team Leader of Domino’s Nutrition programme in the Toti area, shared that the mamas who run these learning centres were absolutely delighted and grateful to receive warm items that will help protect the little ones from the winter chill.

But while the donation has already made a beautiful difference, Cheryl also shared a gentle challenge: simple maths shows that the volunteer group’s generosity will reach about 15% of the preschoolers in the crèches.
